Turning a house into a home

Alright, it’s been awhile since I’ve updated, but I HAVE been working on stuff. I’ll be sure to post what the kitchen cabinet looks like soon. :) This is the mess that my backyard has become. When they ‘removed’ the fence before I owned the house, they just chopped it off at the base. So in order for me to put in a new fence, I have to remove the huge cement left over from the old posts. You can see 3 of them and my mom and brother’s feet (thanks for helping!) And Hiro … he was helping too, kinda. ;)

Alright, I decided to try and finish cabinets myself for the kitchen. I will tear out all the the old, tear down a wall and put in all new cabinets. Ambitious I know. We’ll see how this actually goes. ;) I did get my first unfinished oak cabinet, it will be for under the sink. I’m going to stain it black. Wish me luck. ;)

Happy Halloween! The house is all decorated. The pumpkins still need to be carved, but everything else is done. :) I love Halloween!

Here is the before and after of my craigslist dresser. From off-white and gold to black and pewter. I’m hoping to find a couple night stands that have this same look, or similar. Thanks to Wyatt for helping me unload and then bring it upstairs once it was finished. :)

Shelves!

I put in shelves in one of my bedroom closets, all in a weekends work. I also got an old dresser off craigslist and almost have that repainted. Didn’t post a pic of the shelves, ‘cause they’re boring, but I will post a before and after of the dresser once I have the after. :)

I’m a Slacker …

Ok, so I haven’t done much of anything since I got my new big TV and set up the video games. Whoops. ;) I have done little projects, but cleaning and unpacking make for boring posts, so I think it’s about time I get back to some of the big projects. Just which to start on first? Take down the one wall of wallpaper in the living room and then paint it? Or maybe focus on building a new fence while it’s still nice outside? I would like to start the kitchen since that will be the biggest project on the whole house, but that requires an electrician. ;)

Oh this was a busy weekend! We finished painting my bedroom shortly after midnight on Thursday, so a HUGE thank you to my mom and Alicia for helping so much! Then a HUGE thank you to my family for moving everything in on Saturday, it was a LOT of work, I’m still tired. The king-sized bed did not want to fit up the steep and narrow old staircase, it took all 5 of us to get it finally. After we got my old dryer down to the basement we realized there were only hook-ups for a gas dryer (mine is electric). The fridge is 36” wide on it’s thinnest side and the widest doorway to the kitchen was 32” wide, so the fridge is residing in my dining room for now. ;) And last but not least, a HUGE thank you to my dad for getting my stove up and running yesterday. :) I was only thinking how sweet a dual-fuel range would be to cook with when I bought it, didn’t stop to think there’s only gas hook-ups in the kitchen, no electric for an oven. My dad and ran the wires from the last owners hot tub to the kitchen, so now my oven is working! Yay! :)

Doesn’t look like I got much done this weekend … but I did! ;) My mom and I got the bedroom ceiling painted. My parents trimmed back the trees in the backyard and some of the overgrown plants while I got the first coat of paint on the trim in my bedroom. I was hoping to finish the bedroom this weekend, but you know how these things go, they always take longer than planned. ;)

This is after I puttied all the cracks and nail holes, cleaned up the mold and got every last bit of wallpaper down. Oh and put a little bit of the gray paint on the wall, just to see what the color was going to look like. :)

It was a busy weekend. My little brother helped me tear down the wallpaper in my bedroom. Found plenty of little cracks in the plaster, and mildew/mold under one of the windows. Really not too bad for an 80+ year old house.
